Posture at address and throughout the swing is the key to a better and more consistent golf swing. Modern day life consists of large amounts of time spent in a seated position due to driving, work, computers and TV. Prolonged sitting in a poor position (Fig 1) can be hugely detrimental to your golf swing as it can lead to muscle imbalances affecting posture and possibly leading to injury. The muscles at the anterior of the body tend to get tight and short with corresponding weakness and lengthening of the posterior muscles, which are the key to maintaining good posture.
(Fig 1) Poor sitting posture

These alterations in muscle lengths result in the commonly seen postures below.
The solution is to maintain good posture while at work/driving/sitting is to make sure that your seat is set up correctly (Fig 2) and break up prolonged periods with ‘chain breaking’ exercises such as:
- Extension exercises – stand flat against a wall, with your shoulders, back of the head and upper back in contact. Hold for 10 seconds.
- Lying on your back with a rolled towel between your shoulder blades and arms stretched overhead.
